Don’t Look Back!

My four year old granddaughter has learned to ride her bike! One sunny spring day, as she began her ride down a long driveway, I reminded her that the rock was rough and that she would need to look forward, not back, as I was following her in my car. I encouraged her to focus on pedaling and steering and then repeated the famous last words “be careful and don’t get hurt!”

With a big smile on her sweet face, she started her journey. Spinning the back tire with the strength and determination of her small legs, she was off. As she reached the 15′ mark, she looked back. The front wheel began to wobble and the bike quickly fell to its side. I could see the tears beginning as I ran up to her but she hopped back on and continued down the driveway, this time not looking back until she reached the house and the bike had stopped.

As this experience was unfolding, God reminded me that looking back in my life has caused and will cause a wreck and that I must keep my eyes forward and on Jesus. Hebrews 12:1-2 talks about the race we are a part of daily. My granddaughter was not in a race but the focus is the same. Hebrews 12:1b says “Let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” and 12:2a says “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Nowhere in this scripture does it mention that we should look back or turn back.

Father, Thank You for Your love, for caring about us so much that You sent Your Son Jesus, The Living Word, as our help and direction for each day. Remind us of the simple things and keep our paths straight, always looking to You. In Your name I pray. Amen.
