As my grandson sat in a group circle of preschoolers being instructed to “always listen to the teacher,” he responded with,” but I only listen to God.” Well now, what a profound comment for a 4 year old and in any other time and place, Sunday School, at home, to a friend that would be the perfect thought or answer. But in this case the teacher was the authority figure and each child is her responsibility. The teacher makes the best decisions with all children in mind at all times and God at that moment was not what she was looking for. The teacher’s response, however, was a very good one, “Yes, we do, but do you think God would want you to listen to your teacher?” Gus responded with a, “yes.”
There are times in our lives when we just don’t think people (our authorities) know what they are doing or are just not doing the right thing, but God’s Word reveals very clear instruction on following authority.
Roman’s 14:1-7 says, “Let all souls be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to the for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must need be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay you tribute also; for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.”
In essence Scripture, God’s Word, says that we are called to pray for, honor and submit to authorities and that allows us to influence others for Christ. If a 4 year old should and can, there is a lesson to be learned by the rest of us.
Almighty God, Creator of everything and everyone, and authority over all, You put people in authority in this world; may we come to understand this and honor You by following Your Word of instruction in this area. Take my pride and rebellion to authority and replace it with Your peace. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
